 What are the issues?

Unfortunately, there is no definitive research to tell us how many children and young people are affected by online abuse. This is because they often feel ashamed, guilty or do not know they are being abused nor who to tell .

We do know:

·       1 in 3 internet users are under the age of 18 years

·       1 in 4 children and young people have witnessed something upsetting or have come across racist or hate messages

·        1 in 8 have been bullied

and that offenders seek to :

·       groom children and young people on line for their own purposes including sexual abuse and exploitation,   child trafficking and  radicalisation

·       troll (send menacing and threatening messages)

·       persuade  children and young people to "sext" (sharing intimate, sexually explicit  images of themselves with others online)

·       encourage children to self harm

·       create fake accounts or steal  identities to cause embarrassment or fear

Would you know what to do if a young person told you:

·       they were being stalked on line by an unknown person via social media?

·       their friend had sent them child sexual abuse images?

·       they were gambling online?

·       they were having suicidal thoughts?
